Ecological monitoring of sports and recreational facilities

Monitoring of small mammals in the area of the mountain ski complex JSC “Krasnaya Polyana”

Results of monitoring in 2011

In the spring and autumn 2011 gathering of data was organized on the species composition and quantitative ratio of small mammals (mouse-like rodents) in the study area. Because of works on constructing the skiing runs and deforestation of the territory the monitoring was organized on the neighboring forest stand areas. Small and medium-sized mammals are not seen to get adapted to the altered landscape. The species composition of mouse-like rodents has not changed though a tendency for the population decrease is observed. As the channel bank and terrace above the floodplain have been transformed totally (combined motor and railway construction) the first entrapment line is not available for monitoring.

The second entrapment line was organized in the beech forest in the vicinity of the second stage of the Gornaya Karusel complex. The stationary monitoring plot serves to identify the species composition of small mammals, quantitative ratio of selected species and following the trends in the communities in the study area in the long term.

It should be noted that in the study area the pigmy forest mouse and Caucasian mouse occur in equal proportion, though in 2009 the pigmy forest mouse was prevailing. However, starting from 2010-2011 bush voles that prefer debris forest become absent.

Thus, the occurrence of 6 species of small mammals have been established with certainty on the study area. The analysis of quantitative and qualitative ratios of mouse species shows that the condition of the community of micromammals was not satisfactory on the study area in the spring and autumn 2011.

Results of monitoring in 2010

In the spring and autumn 2010 gathering of data was organized on the species composition and quantitative ratio of small mammals (mouse-like rodents) in the study area.

2010 monitoring results show that the study area the pigmy forest mouse and Caucasian mouse occur in approximately equal proportion, though in 2009 the pigmy forest mouse was prevailing. In 2010 bush voles preferring forest areas is almost completely absent.

Adaptation of small and medium-sized mammals is not currently seen to get adapted to the altering landscapes. The species composition of mouse-like rodents has not changed by now, however a trend for reduction in the species composition is seen.

In addition to the above species vestiges of marten (Martes sp), Caucasus edible dormouse (Glis glis) in the vicinity of water fall Polikarya.

Thus, the occurrence of 6 species of small mammals have been established with certainty on the study area. Based on the analysis of quantitative and qualitative ratios of mouse species a preliminary conclusion can be made that the condition of the community of micromammals was not satisfactory on the study area in the spring and autumn 2010.
